The Security Challenges of Shared Organizational AI Agents
Understanding agent access, ownership, and accountability
Organizational AI agents are shared by multiple users and perform a wide range of tasks across workflows and systems. Because they are designed to support many activities and operate continuously, these agents are typically granted broad, persistent permissions so they can function without constant human intervention.
Because organizational agents must support many activities, their access is often more expansive than that of any individual user. In practice, this means they are frequently overprivileged – not due to negligence, but to allow them to access resources quickly. These agents are powerful access intermediaries, executing actions and retrieving information using their own authorization rather than a specific user’s permissions.
While this model delivers significant productivity gains, it also introduces meaningful security risk. Overprivileged agents can access sensitive resources, span multiple systems, and act without clear, real-time human intent. When something goes wrong, it can be difficult to understand who initiated an action, what data was exposed, or how far the impact extends. Without clear ownership, visibility, and controls, organizational AI agents become hard to govern and even harder to contain within traditional security models.
